Gary and Alan at Bishop FM Studio

I strongly recommend you find the time to listen to Gary’s weekly show – 2 hours of the best blues and blues inspired music, new and old, from all over the world. It’s all good stuff, but you will be really amazed by some of the tracks he plays – things you just might never come across. His understanding of the impact and influence of the blues, how its energy and spirit have infected and fused with all genres of music – over the last 100 years and bang up to this minute – makes for a real treat.

Listen live, when you can email him or comment on the facebook page, or stream it later, whenever you can fit it in – make time!

This is the 2nd year running the Blues Show has been nominated for a British Blues Award – in the Independent Blues Broadcast category. Voting ends on 31st July so if you haven’t already voted, here’s the link: http://www.britishbluesawards.co.uk/vote.htm – You have to confirm your vote in the follow-up email for it to count!

We joined Gary in the studio to play live on his 15th July show, and had a blast. We played 2 sets, starting acoustic – doodling on the dobro before building up to ‘This train can’t turn on the tracks’. This is the first outing for this song as we’d had to drop it from our set at the New Brunswick Battle of the Blues final after I snapped a string. Then we played an old one – ‘Cold Wind’ – and, with Gary joining in on blues harp to create a nice old-school folk blues feel, ‘Law Dog’.

The show was slide guitar heavy – some big names:  Sonny Landreth, Derek Trucks, Eric Sardinas. Then I had to sit up straight and play – How to follow that? Er, cheers mate! “Well, you’re in good company!”, says Gary. We played electric for the second set, with as much as a full band sound as we could get away with in the limited space and no monitors. First up, my slide guitar out front on ‘Certain Something’, then ‘All Alone’, then wrapping up with a raucous knock-about on ‘Only leaves me my blues to drink’.

Great feedback from listeners – from far and wide: Italy, the USA, Cumbria 😉 We plugged our forthcoming gigs and, before the show even finished, we were being offered new bookings! So, muchos thanks to Gary, and to Alan for videoing the session, from myself, Richy and Gav – great fun and good exposure.
