New Year Blues News…

The New Year is off to a great start: I got into the studio on Jan 2nd and, thanks to the magic ears and fingers of Dave Curle, we now have our first track mixed. It’s called Certain Something and it’s a rollicking slide guitar led song on the not-very-January theme of enjoying the summer sunshine and feeling the heat with a fine-looking, long-legged woman who just has that ‘certain something’ about her. Hard to say what it is exactly, but she’s got something special, something extra and she’s got you hooked!

You’ve got that certain something,

It’s in your smile, It’s in the way you move.

You’ve got that certain something,

You turn me on, yes you do.

Come on now, you know you’ve made me you fool.

Now my love, love, love gonna fall like rain on you.

I wrote the song a good few years ago when I was travelling around Italy with my wife. We’d quit our jobs and set sail – on the ferry from South Shields to Amsterdam and then down through Germany, Switzerland and all round Italy. With two rucksacks and my trusty Taylor ‘Big Baby’ acoustic guitar – busking and playing bars and cafes for about 5 months in the summer of 2002. I wrote it on acoustic guitar, in a style inspired by the delta and Louisiana blues – I think I’d been listening to a Robert Pete Williams’ album (Those Prison Blues) a lot. He plays with some unusual tunings and timings, really interesting and inspiring stuff. Playing it with the band, the song settled into a more straightforward structure with a great groove and a typically askew middle section:

And when it rains, you’re gonna get wet – you bet!

And when the sun is shining, I can see you smiling…

I’m gonna make your garden grow…

It’s good to get something new out there – it’s been a long, long time – and I was chuffed that the track got some airplay straight away. You can hear it, along with a huge range of  great blues and roots tunes, on:
